Ornaments from the past

One of the decorations that I made decades ago...literally back in the 70's...was a magazine folded Christmas Tree.  (This was really a cheap decoration!)  We used Reader's Digest Magazines...everyone either had dozens or knew neighbors who were only to happy to give them away.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a segment on the Martha Stewart Show about a magazine folded Christmas Tree.   It really was quite beautiful.   Instead of spray painting the finished item, they sprayed it with glue and used glitter.

I remember making all sizes of trees using magazines and paperbacks as well as making Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus adding a styrofoam ball for the head, cotton for the hair and beard and felt for clothes.

You can find the directions on the Martha Stewart Show Web Site under the title of Magazine Christmas Trees.

Another ornament I made eons ago was the Faux Patchwork Ornament....

All you need is some fabric scraps...

Something to poke the fabric into the styrofoam.   I found that a metal nail file with a rounded point works best...

Styrofoam balls.  Best size is the three inch.   A 2 1/2 inch is okay, but smaller can be tricky.  Sometimes when a small ball is used pieces can break off...

You also need scissors and glue and some trim (if desired)...

To make, all you need to do is cut a small piece of fabric approximately 1 1/2" square and tuck about 1/4" of the edge straight down using the nail file.  Cut another piece and tuck it down next to the first piece using the same tuck down area on one side.   Continue adding small pieces until completely covered.

At first this is a bit dificult and if the seams do not want to stay down, you can add glue and trim to all the seam areas as shown.   As you continue working, it becomes easier and neater.   Also, you can try using the compressed styrofoam balls instead of the regular ones.   These are more difficult to press the fabric into, but they do stay.

I finished filling more of my little boxes...

And I finished wrapping my embellishment yarn on cards....

It now looks like we definitely will be going south for a while, so I am really happy I got a headstart on selecting my crafts. As I continue, I will show you what I decide to take and see if you agree with my selection.

By the way, it did rain last night, but it cleared up and was another beautiful day once again.   We are really, really lucky!

Thanks for stopping by...
