January 24: Mindfulness

I was looking out the window at the snow covered bushes and remembered the blossoms on this bush from last summer.  Quite a difference.  I am always amazed, however, that the bush does retrain it's leaves through the winter.  They droop and curl but stay on!

So this week's focus is mindfulness.  You may ask what is mindfulness.  There are a lot of different descriptions of mindfulness but basically it is the ability to be present and aware of what's going on right now for you.  Not focusing on what happened yesterday, or a week ago or even a year ago.  And neither focusing on what may happen an hour from now or a week or a year.

Quite frankly, when you think about it...all you have is right now, this very moment.  Yes you can think about yesterday and plan for tomorrow, but all you really have is right now.

This idea is focusing on 'now'...of being mindful...is to help eliminate anxiety.  Meditation is one very good way to be mindful.  Meditation comes to each of us in ways that are comfortable for us.  Sitting quietly, concentrating on your breathings, perhaps using a mediation app.

Quilters have discovered that actually quilting by hand becomes a way of meditating with the constant repetition of stitching.  Many find drawing affects them.  I enjoy doodling with repetition in the designs that I draw like the examples below...

Today, think about ways in which you may feel comfortable with mindfulness, being completely present to 'right now'.  Maybe just looking at what you are doing more closely like peeling a potato...what does it feel like in your hand, etc.  I know, it sounds a bit weird but by concentrating on what you are doing instead of letting your mind wander, you can take a break from any anxiety you may feel and relax.

Talk with you tomorrow...
