Happy Day After Thanksgiving...Black Friday!  Do you know why it's called Black Friday?  Well, back in olden days (1950's-1060's) the Philadelphia police nick named the day after Christmas Black Friday because of the traffic and crowds.  Retailers have spotlighted the day now to mean a great day to shop!

When I lived in NYC, I loved to go out on Black Friday...not to shop, but to watch the crowds.  Folks were basically nice, smiling, laughing and having an enjoyable time.

I may have purchased something it if was a really good sales price but generally I only went to enjoy the Christmas decorations, the friendly crowds and one special treat...I loved to ride on the wooden escalators in Macy's Manhattan Store.  They're still there but you have to look for them.  Reminded me of one of my favorite old movies 'Miracle on 34th Street'!

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.  Here we celebrated very informally...folks dished up their food from the kitchen (even from the pots and pans), getting their own plates and silverware out of the cupboard and drawers...very informal.  But we ate around a very old but large table and just had a great old time.  Yes the parade was on followed by the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Cartoon and then, what else, football!

In the last post, I shared a picture of the basic house built from a cereal box...

Here's how I decorated it with some leftover decorative paper and shiny paper for windows and doors (That paper from the tea box sure is coming in handy.)  I used a red marker on the chimney...

That makes two houses and one church.  I had a few minutes to work on another building and this time I used two jello boxes and one pie crust box cut in half and glued together...

Using glue, I covered each box separately using paper bags and glued them together.  I also added a long rectangle in the front by folding into four equal sections and securing.  I closed the ends by cutting a strip of cardboard that would fit, making it three times as long, folding it into thirds and slipping it in the end.  This building is going to be a school...

There are three main holidays in December.  December 15th is the first day of Hanukkah, December 25th is the first day of Christmas & December 26 is the first day of Kwanzaa.  But there are other holidays less known like Buddism Bodhi Day on December 8th and Wiccan Yule (Winter Solstice) on December 21st.  Whatever you celebrate, it's still nice to use a daily countdown calendar to get ready and create excitement.

Another way to create a calendar is to make small boxes to open maybe adding a piece of leftover candy from Halloween or a slip of paper with something to do, or both.  Making these 'origami folded boxes' is easy. It's best to use lightweight paper.  I like to use lightweight magazine paper...

You can see how big these are compared to large paperclips.  The largest is box is 2 & 1/2 inches and the smaller one is a bit under 2 inches.  (Making the larger box was easier than the smaller one.)  The size of a box is about one-third the size of the paper square.  To make a cover, add about 1/2 inch to the paper square.

The only thing I would add would be to use a bit of stick glue to hold down the two pieces that are in the bottom of the box.  I could show you how to make a box but it's easier to watch a video.  Google 'Easy Origami Masu Box Tutorial.

Folding these boxes is really a lot of fun.  And if you choose to use boxes, you don't have to fold a lot them all at once.  You can continue to add them as the days go by...or even reuse ones that have already been opened.

Do you realize that December 1st is Monday?  We're sliding down that slippery slope faster and faster...your holiday will be here in a blink of an eye so it's time to really think about your next holiday.  But relax this weekend...you can start thinking about it on Monday!!!

Have a wonderful, amazing weekend.

Talk with you on Monday...
