The iris were just beginning to open up when I left.  Their buds were all over the yard ready to brighten up the area.

The lawn had it's first haircut the weekend before I left.  It was really needed because it was ten inches deep in some areas.  Guess that means that summer is here...regular mowing has begun!

I'm hoping that my starter seeds will be okay while I'm gone but I am preparing myself that they won't survive and I still may have to purchase some plants.  But even if they aren't in good shape, I may be able to work with them in the greenhouse.

Today I am working on bricks.  Remember these 'bricks'...

I realized that I didn't bring a lot of batting with me but there is a quilt store in town so I can pick up some batting there...here's hoping.  I did bring lots of fabric...

And I also remembered to bring my template...one which I made myself out of cardboard and covered with clear packing tape...

So on the way out when I really didn't want to listen to the radio or a audio book I got to thinking about life...the meaning of life, why we are here, etc.  Maybe that's something that someone my age considers but listening to my grandchildren it's a question they too think about.

When you consider the vastness of the universe, we do indeed seem to be such a tiny part that one wonders why.  Thinking back to my parents lives and then to my grandparents lives, and then considering my own life, I have come to a very comforting realization.

It's like that song 'This little light of mine'...you let your light/life shine in the tiny corner of the universe you occupy.  And by that I mean, your life impacts those around you.  I can see that with my parents and grandparents...their lives impacted those (known and unknown neighbors) around them.

One of my grandmas grew gigantic gardens and gave the bounty to friends and family.  She sewed (with a treadle machine!) dozens of quilts for those in need.  And her house was always open and a pot of tea brewing ready to listen, help, enjoy, laugh and just be with neighbors.  I can see the same in my parent's lives.

And when I take stock of my own life, I have hopefully impacted the lives of those around me for the better.  Obviously things don't always go the way we want, and none of our lives are perfect, but on the whole most of us, and that includes me, strive to be the better angels of our nature.

A great weekend coming up...it's Mother's Day so remember to wish your mother a happy day...

Talk with you on Monday...
