February 16: Crafting Fun

Last summer in Park City Utah

It's already above freezing and sunny...the snow is melting fast.  Today is supposed to get to the 50's and tomorrow to the 60's.  All the snow should be gone by the weekend.   And rain is scheduled!   The east coast has more rain that they know what to do with and the west is experiencing a horrible drought!  The Colorado River is on emergency status and the Hoover Dam has never been this low.  Doesn't quite seem fair, does it?  Global warming sure seems real...wonder if we will take notice and do something before it is too late?

The craft today is a simple crocheted bookmark...

Supplies needed are: Yarn, crochet hook, embroidery needle, threader, beads, beading needle, scissors...

The bookmark doesn't require much yarn so if you have leftover yarn, use it.  The size crochet hook will determine the size of the heart as you can see in the above picture.  The larger the hook, the larger the heart.  Here are the instructions for the heart.

Begin with magic circle (recommend that you look up on YouTube how to make a magic circle)
Chain 2
3 Triple Crochet into the circle
3 Double Crochet into the circle
Chain 1
1 Triple Crochet into the circle
Chain 1
3 Double Crochet into the circle
3 Triple Crochet into the circle
Chain 2
Slip stitch into the circle
Chain 1
End by cutting yarn leaving about 7 inches and pulling yarn through last chain tight

Now pull the magic circle tight to make a heart.  (See above YouTube directions).
Tie a knot with the two strands of yarn at the top of the heart.
Use embroidery needle to bury the loose strands of yarn into the heart and cut.

Create a slip knot onto crochet hook
Slip Stitch at the bottom point of the heart
Chain 30-40 chains (depending on how long to make the tail)
Finish off by cutting yarn leaving a ten inch length of yarn and pulling yarn though last chain

Tie a knot at the end of the chains to hold beads
Thread the 10 length of yarn through the beading needle using the large end of the threader
Add beads. (Note, you need beads with larger hole to accommodate the yarn)
Tie several knots at the end of the beads to hold them in place
Cut yarn about an inch below the beads and fray

That's it...quick and easy.
