March 1: Creativity

Even though it didn't get very warm yesterday, a lot of snow melted.  When I took the garbage out yesterday the sunny areas were melting, the shaded areas were like an ice rink!  Today the high is in the mid to high 40's with rain, unfortunately, but the snow and ice should be gone by the end of the day.

I don't know about you but I am glued to tv watching what is happening with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  And I still can't believe that the world finds itself in this situation.  My thoughts go out to the Ukrainian people and my hope and expectations are that the rest of the world continues to support Ukraine in ways that do not lead to WWIII.

So on to creativity.  Do you know that the concept of creativity is a relatively new concept even though the use of creativity has been around forever.  We just called it by a different name...basically...'discovery'.  Think of all the discoveries that have been made from finding new worlds to finding new cures.  They were made because of the creativity of those who were making them.

Discoveries has the implication of something outside of one's self for the most part.  Creativity, on the other hand, implies some inward thought process that leads to solutions and finding new cures for diseases like the current covid pandemic crisis.  And creativity, like love, expands and expands to fit the needs of the creative quest.

So every time you find a new way to mend a tear, or fix a dinner or, even, paint a picture, you are using your creativity.  What new solutions to situations can you find with your creativity?

Here's a creative idea for using old magazines.  Supplies needed are magazines, scissors, glue, tape, decorative yarn, paper clips, cardboard.  First tear magazine pages out and cut in half vertically...

Roll each piece lengthwise.  The easiest way is to fold the edge up about a quarter inch twice and then roll the rest of the way to make long, slender cylinders.  Glue the edges and use small pieces of tape to hold until the glue dries.  These can be made in any size.  The example uses 18 rolls cut in half.

Once the rolls are made, using paper clips, fasten one to another at the bottom to make a circle...

When the bottom of the circle is fastened together, use decorative yarn to weave together in the center tying a bow after a few rounds...

When finished, fasten the top together with paper clips.  Cut out two pieces of cardboard.  One the size of the outside of the circle the container makes and one the size of inside and cover with decorative magazine pictures using glue...

Glue the smaller circle in the middle of the larger circle...

Glue the top area of the larger circle and the side area of the smaller circle (You can also use a glue gun for this step.) and place on the bottom of the paper roll circle to make the bottom of the container.  To decorate the top, push small pieces of yarn into the tops of the paper rolls...

And you have a cute decorative container made out of magazines...

This is only one way to use magazine pages rolled up into cylinders.  There are tons of ways to use them, just search YouTube and you will probably find one that appeals to you.
