What a difference 18 degrees makes! It was only 81 today, no clouds, almost cold compared to the 99 last week! I managed to take down the last shelf in my studio/office so with the exception of things that I am using which will be packed a few days before moving, the office/studio is done.
I also managed to pack a couple more boxes of fabric. Think I have about four more boxes left to pack and then I can use the large plastic containers for things from the kitchen!
The process to purchase the house is still going well but I am keeping my fingers crossed!
Today's focus is 'nature' and I want to focus on growing herbs indoors. I don't know about you but if I wait until fall to bring in herbs, my success is not great so I like to begin about the middle of summer to start growing herbs indoors.
First of all, choose herbs that grow well in the house. Basil, mint, oregano, parsley and thyme always grew for me. My friends have had success with chives and rosemary but unfortunately, my green thumb hasn't worked with those herbs...but I keep trying.
You can grow in any container BUT it has to have good drainage. If there are no drainage holes, use rocks to create a drainage area. Also, be ready to transplant when the herb out grows the container and becomes root bound.
Herbs like lots of sunlight so keep that in mind when you choose a place to grow your herbs. Keep your herbs watered but do not overwater...less is best.
When harvesting, keep in mind the size of the plant. The smaller the plant, the smaller the harvest.
Starting herbs can be done with seeds (I like to soak mine in a wet paper towel before planting.), with cuttings from large herbs(My favorite way to start herbs indoors. Keep in water until roots begin growing.) or you can purchase small plants from a nursery.
And, of course, the best thing is to use fresh herbs in cooking. It makes a big difference. I like to keep mine close to the kitchen if there is light.
I have to say that I can't wait to have herbs indoors again. I didn't even plant any outdoors as a move was anticipated. It will be one of the first things I do after moving in and getting somewhat settled.
That's it for today...
Talk with you tomorrow...
