A cloudy day today and a bit warmer than yesterday. By this time of year there are usually tons of fireflies or lightening bugs out at night but there have been very few around here. Last night I counted about five. I looked up to see if there were any problems and it looks like they are in decline due to land development and pesticides.
Do you remember when you were growing up how many there were at night? It was like magic. I always tried to catch them in a mayo jar for a while but then let them go...how about you?
August is right about the corner. Summer seems to be going fast. I will say the fall can't come soon enough for me!
So Wednesday's focus is reading and I have a suggestion. Most folks now-a-days, when looking to find something out about a particular subject just google it on the internet. And you can get a lot of good as well as misleading information when googling.
Say you want to find out about the history of quilting. There are a lot places on the internet that can give you information about it but the library is an even better place to find information especially indepth information. And generally a book will have more reliable information than some postings on the internet.
Remember, you can get books on line to download both for free and at an online store. So next time you want to find out something about a particular subject, remember to try the library for books as well as the internet. Actually, the internet can guide you to book titles. Just remember that not all information on the internet is accurate so be sure to check on the source. And don't forget to check with the library.
Case in point: I was looking for some new crafting techniques so I downloaded, three at a time, books from the library on crafting. I would scan them quickly to see if anything caught my eye. Most of the time they didn't but after downloading about 14 over a couple of days - I would return them immediately after scanning if I found nothing - I found some really neat techniques in books on old crafts.
One of them I remember my mom told me she used when she taught in a one room school house to duplicate papers for students. It's called hectograph and you can make a pad out of gelatin to make it!
That's all for today, folks...
Stay cool - talk with you tomorrow...
