January 27: Mindfulness

Have you seen crocheted wind spinners?  I was strolling through YouTube and discovered them and had to try one right away.  I just finished my second one having changed the pattern to make it more solid by using more single crochets instead of triple crochets.  Here's a close-up...

I made a large tassel to add weight at the bottom...

With even a small breeze, it spins back and forth.  I can't wait to hang them outside!

I want to share a story about a close friend who used mindfulness and mediation to help her through a difficult time.  She had to make a decision about her job that was very hard.  She loved her job but felt that she was being taken advantage of with more and more responsibilities heaped on her plate.  At the same time there were other employees who felt no compunction in attacking anyone who disagreed with them.

Her life was filled with sadness at leaving the job as well as anxiety with staying.  The only relief she got was through mindfulness and meditation.  Any time anxious thoughts surfaced, she brushed them aside and focused on her breathing.  She laughed when she told me that she never thought about breathing so much in her life.  In the end she chose to leave her beloved job for the betterment of business.  And although sad and a bit guilty, she felt that her decision was right.

By focusing on the present, mindfulness can provide a break from the anxieties of both the past and the future.  Did you know that mindfulness can change the physical structure of your brain? And it certainly reduces the tension in you body.  You can feel it drain from your shoulders as they relax.  As a matter of fact, your entire body relaxes.

Continue spending a few minutes each day focusing on your mindfulness...think of it as a mini-vacation as well as a healthful interlude for your body.

Talk with you tomorrow...
