March 21: Follow Your Bliss

Today, the weather is sunny and warm, about mid to upper 50's.  I swept the patio again and had my afternoon tea outside, enjoying the birds.  I did need my sweatshirt and vest on but it was comfortable and refreshing.  After a winter of the house being closed up, it's nice to smell fresh air.

We begin a new focus this week.  Follow your bliss!  It's a phrase that was coined by Joseph Campbell.  He was a literature professor at Sarah Lawrence College mostly known for his writings about comparative mythology and the functions of myth in various human cultures as well as mythical figures.

The Power of Myth, a PBS program of a dialog between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell remains one of the most intriguing explanations of the Campbell's journey into the importance of myth in culture.  And although it was filmed back in the mid 1980's, it is worth a listen.  There's a book that goes along with the video.

Campbell was a pioneer in the idea of following your bliss.  The first question folks usually ask is What is Bliss?  The dictionary defines it as perfect happiness or great joy, or the act of reaching the state of perfect happiness.  It's actually a lot more than that definition.  It is more akin to finding the right path for you to follow that leads to the state of bliss in your life...a life full of joy and happiness and pleasure.

It takes a bit of discovery to reach that state of bliss.  We will spend that rest of the week, exploring possible ways to find your 'bliss'.  It's both simple and complex at the same time.  Kind of an 'aha' moment when you realize it.

For tomorrow, find a place and time in which you can spend some time alone without interruptions to give it some thought.  Campbell describes this space and time as scared.  A place of honor for you to look within to find your bliss.

So, have you been doing any crafts lately?  I have been crocheting butterflies in honor of spring...

They are about the size of a half dollar.  Very simple and fast to make.  I used 4 ply yarn that was very soft.  I would write down the instructions but decided to send you to the link that I used.  Here it is:

Enjoy!

Talk with you tomorrow...
