Another beautiful day! Rain forecast for Thursday and temperatures look like they may be a bit lower next weekend...but no snow.
The Supreme Court Hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson had some fireworks this morning with Lindsey Graham's questioning. I think it's about time that we had a black female judge on the court and welcome her addition to the court.
The Invasion of Ukraine continues but not at all the way the invading dictator thought the invasion would go. Ukraine did not welcome the invaders...Ukrainian people are fighting to keep control of their nation. Unfortunately, the invaders are bombing it into rubble with not respect to the laws about war.
So onto our current focus. Joseph Campbell has said the following:
"If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind
of track that has been there all the while, waiting
for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the
one you are living. Wherever you are - if you are
following your bliss, you are enjoying that
refreshment, that life within you all the time."
(Joseph Campbell in the Power of Myth)
To find you bliss, Joseph Campbell advocates that you must have a sacred space. His definition of sacred space is interesting. It is similar to a place that a writer or an artist would create to encourage their creative endeavors.
"(Sacred space) is an absolute necessity for anybody
today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or
so a day, where you don't know what was in the
newspapers that morning, you don't know who your
friends are, you don't know what you owe anybody,
you don't know what anybody owes you. This is a
place where you can simply experience and bring
forth what you are and what you might be. This is a
place of creative incubation. At first you may find
that nothing happens there. But if you have a sacred
place and use it, something eventually will happen.
(Joseph Campbell in the Power of Myth)
To find your bliss you may have to be a risk-taker, open minded...choosing that road less traveled. You also need to take time to quietly, honestly think about your life and what really brings you joy at the deepest level which may not necessarily be the latest success in your life.
An example from a friend of mine may help. This person has a professional job and is very successful. And she would describe her life as happy and satisfying. In her spare time, though, she likes to write stories. Something caught her unaware one day when she realized that she sat down to spend a few minutes working on a story she was writing, only to be completely astonished when she looked at the clock and found that she had spent five hours writing...totally absorbed in the process and feeling something she had never felt before. Not necessarily overly joyful or satisfied...just the feeling that she was doing what she should be doing.
Have you ever felt that way? Spend time today and the rest of the week in that sacred space discerning how you feel about your life. In order to follow your bliss, you need to find it...
Talk with you tomorrow...
