March 3: Creativity

The snow is almost gone...it's sunny and warm, almost 50 degrees.  Forecast is for the next two days to be around 40 degrees and then almost 70 degrees on Sunday.  It looks like slow up and down progress toward spring weather!

And I don't know about you but I would be willing to pay more for everything if  doing so would halt the invasion by Russia of Ukraine.  How about you?  It would be much better than an all out WWIII.  If that happens all bets are off on what happens and how many people die due to the actions of a dictator.

Remember the right brain - left brain concepts.  Neuroscientists now talk in terms of basically three networks in your brain.  There's a network the keep you focused on what's going on around you...to keep you paying attention.  Then there's a network that allows you to imagine and to daydream.  Finally, there's a network that recognize things that you have seen or felt before and allows you to identify the feeling or item.

Creativity uses all three networks first by identifying a situation, second by thinking about possible solutions, and third by determining if the solution is familiar and will work.

For instance, say you want to create a quilt.  First you have identified the situation of making a quilt.  Next, you look at the supplies (fabric) you have on hand to make a quilt.  Now you can imagine all the different types of quilt patterns to choose from.  Once you have chosen a pattern, past experiences will help identify things that are familiar and work such as sewing a y-seam.  (Quilters will understand this technique!)

So today's craft is another scrap idea...a miniature book.  Supplies needed are regular white paper (one piece), decorative paper (very small amount - perhaps a magazine cover!), scissors, glue, ruler, pencil.

Cut a piece of regular white paper 8 1/2 by 11) in half lengthwise.  Using one piece, fold in half lengthwise...

Fold in half as shown...

Fold ends down as shown...

Fold the two top folded edges to the center fold...

Fold the edges to the center...

Fold the center right fold in opposite direction as shown...

Glue the inside folds together as shown...

Lay the pages on the back of the decorative paper as shown and draw the outline marking the center lines...

Next, add a seam about 1/4 to 3/8 inch around and add the center line of about 1/8 inch if using the shown amount of pages.  If you add pages, the center lines will be larger...

Cut out decorative paper and using a ruler, fold at all the lines...

Cut out the squares in the corner and fold down the center line as shown and apply glue...

Place the pages on the glued area and then glue down each of the overlapping sections as shown on both sides...

Here's another example using more pages which are overlapped and glued together.  The quarter shows how small the book is...

You can add a piece of decorative paper as a clasp...

Once you have made one, it's hard not to make many more.  You can add a chain to make a necklace or even a pin.  You can write a story or draw pictures.  Use it as a journal.  The possibilities are endless...and it is really very inexpensive!

Talk with you tomorrow...
