April 26: Simplifying Your Clothing

This is what the entire yard looks like...tons and tons of dandelions!  It's drizzling out, dark clouds and cool but I took a walk around the yard to see what else is popping out.  More picture tomorrow.

So I have been packing again.  I think that all the knick knacks and miscellaneous decorations are all packed.  Books next.  We picked up 25 small boxes (from UHaul - can't beat those prices for that quality of box) to pack them up.  Once packed, I think I will just leave the boxes on the shelves.

I have one more box of things like vases, candle sticks, etc. that are kept in an old icebox.  Going to finish that this afternoon.  I have packed one large box of things from the studio.  I plan on packing at least one more box today if not two.

It's taking a bit of time to pack in the studio because I do want to keep some craft supplies available to create with when studio is packed up - so I am taking my time.

I have a large case (picked up from the free pile at the apartment complex in Brooklyn) which I think was a sales case.  That will be for my scrapcraft supplies.  I also have a soft sided small case which I plan on using for my embroidery/crochet supplies.  That leaves one more small case for my drawing/zentangle supplies.

So, how did the examination of your clothes go?  Did anything really get your attention?  Is it time to pare down?  One note on having fewer clothing items...it takes less time to decide what to wear.

Some folks take everything out and pile it on a bed.  That will certainly give you an idea of how big your wardrobe is!  Some folks like to take a few pieces at a time.  Both plans have merit but the important thing is to make a plan and implement it.

A couple basic facts to consider.  First, if you haven't worn it in a year (or more) and see no need to wear it in the next year, it's probably time to donate it.  I am thinking here of a one of a time dress like a gown.  If it's a regular item and you haven't worn it in a year, is it reasonable to think you will ever wear it again?

And, second, for all those clothes that don't fit...be real, are you really going to fit into them again?

If the item is stained or in need of repair and you have't mended it, are you going to ever get around to mending it?

Keep those items that fit well and which you feel good in.  And it's nice to keep items that mix and match together.  Also, make sure that you are taking into consideration what your needs are right now.  Although, I have found that even with a full closet of clothes, I generally use about 20% which is the average.

Now it's time to decide what to keep and what to donate.  If you feel you need more direction, googling 'how to pare down your wardrobe' will give you a ton of ideas.  BUT, make sure that you are not just putting off actually paring down your wardrobe.  And remember, with fewer clothes that fit, you will spend less time choosing what to wear.

Talk with you tomorrow...
