I did finish quilting both collaged fabric wall hangings. I really had no problem with the collaged houses pictures once I stopped using either metallic or invisible thread.
I outlined the houses and trees first and then I quilted the rest of the area with free motion.
I outlined the fish, the shells and the seaweeds with metallic thread but not without problems. Metallic thread (I used several different brands) and my sewing machine are not friends! But I did not finish with free motion quilting. I just left the background without quilting.
The fish, shells and seaweed puff out nicely without the free motion quilting. The houses and trees in the other wall hanging puff out too much. I am tempted to tie the houses in spots using regular thread to take the puffiness down a bit. Both still need to have the edges finished.
Check these photos out...
I won't finish either of these today because I want to spend time working outside, but if the rain comes tomorrow, I will finish them.
Now that I have had some experience working with collage, I am going to start on a larger collaged wall hanging with only one fish to see if I can create a similar type of collaged piece that Susan Carlson makes where the collage is using random pieces to create the appearance of design.
