QUILTERS TAKE MANHATTAN, PART TWO

One thing that I didn't explain was who was sponsoring the Quilters Take Manhattan Event.   Sorry about that.   The Quilt Alliance which was founded in 1993 sponsored QTM.   What is Quilt Alliance you ask?   It's a non-profit organization which supports and develops projects to document, preserve and share the history of quilts and quiltmakers.

Remember those labels that your guilds want you to put on the back of your quilts?   Well, it's a way to keep track of who made it, when it was made, why and any other details.   Quilts last a long time.   Most well past the life of the quiltmaker so it's really nice to know who actually made the quilts and when.

Another project is to interview quiltmakers on video.   There is a long form interview and a short form.   Save Our Stories is archived at the Library of Congress.

The Emcee for the program was Jodie Davis, the author of 35 quilting books as well as on air personality with Quilt It and other quilting programs.

The featured speaker was the very much in demand Ricky Tims, co-host of The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson.   He is also a pianist, conductor composer and arranger, by the way.   The main theme of his presentation was to discover who you are as a creative person and let the art find you. Very inspirational...

He mugged for me afterwards...

Victoria Findlay Wolfe talked about how fifteen minutes of play boosts your creativity.   She was funny talking about double knit blankets her grandma sewed to keep everyone warm in Minnesota.   She loves playing with scraps...no real planning, just pulling them out and making blocks.

Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts was interviewed by Meg Cox for the long form of the Save Our Stories.  And several ladies from a New York City Parks Quilt Group shared their stories using the short form.

Well, known quilter Yvonne Porcella had a trunk show and  Mary Koval shared antique quilts.   What do you think?   Was it worth it?   It sure was!!!

I leave you with a few more of the small quilts...

We were supposed to get rain beginning this afternoon.   The humidity is very high and the storms are all around us, but we haven't had a drop of rain yet.   Hope it gets here soon...

Thanks for visiting...
Talk to you tomorrow...
