25 Days of Christmas Craft - Day One - Crocheted Snowflakes

These are some of the snowflakes that I put on my tree each year.  Today, I am going to share how to make them using 4 ply yarn rather than the thinner crochet thread.  Once you have mastered the snowflakes, you can try using a crochet thread and a smaller crochet hook.  I want to warn you that once you begin, it's like eating potato chips, you can't stop making them.

I use regular white four ply yarn and a crochet hook #7 to make my snowflakes.  So here's how to make a simple crocheted snowflake...

Chain four...

Join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch to make a circle...

Crochet six (6) single crochet into the center (Round 1)...

Crochet two (2) single crochet into each of the six single crochets above (Round 2)...

Join the last single crochet with the first single crochet in Round 2
with a slip stitch then chain 5 stitches...

Skip one single crochet and slip stitch into the next single crochet...

Continue until you have gone around the circle (Round 3) and
slip stitch into the next single crochet...

To begin Round 4, first slip stitch around the chain three times
(Note the thicker area on one side of the five chains...

Crochet seven chains...

Slip stitch into the next hole made by the five chains...

Continue with seven chains until you reach the first of the seven chains.
Slip stitch into the first chain of the first seven chain,
pull through about three or four inches...

Cut the yarn and tie a knot...

Snowflakes do not have to be perfect...only fun to make.  Once you understand how to make them using chains you can vary numerous ways.  More single crochets into the first circle.  Adding more rounds.  Changing the number of chains.  Etc.

One thing to remember is to make sure there are enough chains to allow the snowflake to spread out.  Take a look at this picture...

You can see that the snowflake on the right does not spread out evenly.  That is because there were not enough chains in the final round.  But, quite frankly, I will still use both snowflakes on my tree.

One final note about the ends.  I hide the ends by pulling them through the body of the snowflake several times and then cutting them.  As these snowflakes will not be washed, I use a drop of tacky glue to secure the ends.

Enjoy...
