May 26, 2023 Exercise Book & Blogs

Can you believe that May is almost over?  That means that summer can't be far behind.  I always thought that June, July and August were summer.  If that's what you thought, summer is almost here.

In reality, summer doesn't begin according to the calendar until June 21st.  That's over half way through June!  Doesn't really make sense to me but then I always felt that fall began with September. Again, though, fall doesn't begin according to the calendar until September 23rd!

Continuing with the exercise theme this week, I wanted to find the best books on exercise, the best blogs on exercise and the best exercise.

Everyone defines their own 'best' so the things I write about may not be the ones you enjoy but they are rated as the most popular.

So let's talk about the best book on general exercise and health.  One book that appears on most lists, many times number one, is 'The Fitness Mindset:  Eat for Energy, Train for Tension, Manage Your Mindset and Reap the Results' by Brian Keane.

Another book that rates high for general exercise is 'Spark:  The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and The Brain' by John Jay Ratey (MD) with Eric Hagerman.

There are a ton of books on exercise, how to start, how to build a muscular body, etc. What you need to decide is what you want to achieve through exercise and choose a book that relates to that experience.

Again, there are many, many blogs on exercise.  Two that rank high on many lists are 'Nerd Fitness' and 'Love, Sweat, Fitness'.  Again, as with books, which blog that may appeal to you depends on your desired effect of exercise.

There seems to be only one exercise that everyone deems the best and that is walking.  Just getting up and walking is one of the best ways to get fit.

Do you remember when televisions first came out?  To change the station, you had to get off the sofa and walk over to the tv and manually change the channel.  Now think about how folks just sit and stare and surf the channels for anything to catch their attention...sitting on the sofa with a remote.  We don't even get up and walk to change the station!

The best thing you can do to get started is get off the sofa and walk.  Walk around the yard, the block, your neighborhood, a park, by the ocean, with your dog...but walk for your health.

Talk with you tomorrow...
