The Oldest School House in America???

I ventured out to Old St. Augustine and saw a few sights today.

First was the Castillo de San Marcos Fort, a stone fort built in 1672.   There were nine forts built prior (circa 1565) to this one but they were wooden and are no longer standing.  This one is a rather imposing structure...

The old City Gate, completed in 1739, was the only entrance from the north to the City of St. Augustine.  I was surprised at how small it was...

The Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse is really a bit misleading because the history of the building does not show that it was used as a schoolhouse although that is how it is advertised.   It is, however, the oldest wooden structure still standing in St. Augustine.   It was build around the 1800's out of cypress wood.

Notice the chains on the picture above and below...

The chains run inside the building also.   They are there to hold it down during a hurricane!!!   I did take a couple pictures of the inside...

There were a couple out buildings with this house.   One was a kitchen and the other, truly an out-house.  How historic they are I'm not sure.   But, during this era most kitchens were not located in the main building probably due to chance of fire.   And, it goes without saying that the other building was not located within the main building!!!

I have enjoyed my wanderings around St. Augustine, thus far.   I'll share some more sights tomorrow.

Thanks for visiting...

Enjoy your evening...
