Bookmaking Revisited

I am really having fun making these little books and with the interest some of you have shown, I thought I would put together a more indepth tutorial on how I make these little gems.

First,  you need a piece of 100 weight paper for the spine and inside the covers.   To be honest, I reuse my bristol 100 weight paper  from my supply of not so great creations so it's a win-win situation.  Then you need a good ruler, a pencil and a stylus...

Mark off by 1/2 inch all the way down marking both edges of the paper.  Using a ruler and stylus,  lightly trace the lines across the paper.   Then fold, accordion style, using a bone folder to crease the edges until completely folded...

Next choose the decorative paper for the cover plus another piece of 100 weight paper from your scrap pile.  The other item needed is permanent double sided tape...

First place a strip of tape on the accordion folded spine on the last folded edge.   See picture...

The reason to use 1/2 inch folds is because the tape covers the entire section.   For example,  the last piece of the folded spine on the right hand side above would be covered completely by the double sided tape.

Now turn the book over and using the double sided tape attach the piece of 100 weight paper on the other side of the folded spine that has the front piece.  (Note:  The stripped paper is the back of the flowered paper above.)  Both the front cover and the heavy weight paper are attached to the same strip of folded spine.

Next, fold the front cover over the heavy weight paper.  Use a bone folder to crease the edges and attach with double sided tape to hold.

Cut a piece of decorative paper to cover the inside and attach using the tape on all four sides...

If desired, add a pocket attaching with tape on the sides and bottom of pocket...

Now, you can stop here...

But, you can also add a lot more to the covers before tackling the inside.    I added lace around the edges using ModPodge.   I also added a coat of ModPodge to both the inside and outside of the covers for protection...

I have a lot more to add to the cover, but this is what it looks like so far - inside and out...

There's lots more to do, but I will continue the tutorial next week.   Hope you enjoy making these little gems as much as I do.

Thanks for dropping in...

Take time for yourself this weekend...
