I don't think I have ever seen one before. Then, the question arises...why? Landscaping? Interesting, if nothing else.
And then I passed a pecan tree grove...
Of course, as it is still winter, the trees were bare. My in-laws used to have several in their yard but over the years they lost them to hurricanes. I do like fresh pecans...but then I also like boiled peanuts (and don't laugh at that if you've never had boiled peanuts...they really are good, especially the fresh ones.)
After crossing the bayou into Mississippi...
I stopped at a rest stop to take pictures...
There was a lot of Spanish Moss hanging on the trees. This is a single strand of the plant...
By the way, if you ever collect Spanish Moss, you should really boil it or microwave it to clean out the tiny critters that consider it their home!
While at the rest stop, another surprise was discovered...
A Geocache box. What's geocaching? Well, it's a worldwide outdoor recreational activity of hide and seek. But, using technology. The object is to find a Geocache Container. When you find it you may take something, but they ask that you replace it with something else. There is usually a log book so finders/explorers can enter data as to time and date when it was found.
There's a free introductory Geocache app which helps in finding the containers. For more indepth information, you can also purchase an app. Setting up an account at the Geocache center is free. Children and adults both have a lot of fun searching for containers. And they seem to be all over.
Another activity similar to Geocache is called Strayboots. It's more of a scavenger hunt of locations with lots of information. There are hunts set up in major cities. Check out the site for more information.
The next stop was at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge. This area was established to save the Mississippi Sandhill Crane from extinction. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a visit. This picture shows how beautiful the crane is.
It's also very large...
The center has a short video about the crane as well as several scenes set up depicting the cranes in their natural habitat...
Well, that's it for this week. If you were in the path of the latest winter storm, I hope all is well. Tomorrow, Mardi Gras parades. And yes, I will take pictures...
Thanks for dropping in...
See you on Monday...
