Old Salem is in a residential area so
private homes line the streets but they are of the same era. The
ticket ($25/adult) includes tours of eleven homes and shops plus a Southern
Decorative Arts tour in the Frank L. Horton Museum Center.
But, if
you do not want go inside, you can just walk around and look at
Salem. Of course, the shops, the tavern where they serve a great
meal and the bakery are open.
I did take pictures! This is the
bridge that goes over the road from the visitor center to the walking
tour...
And here is the Frank L. Horton Museum
Center...
The St. Phillips Heritage Center about
the African Moravian Log Church. There is a short slide show and
then life histories of many of the black leaders...
And this is St. Phillips African
Moravian Church which still holds services...
The Gun Shop where they continue to
make rifles of the era which are available for sale...
The tavern...
Where they serve an excellent bacon,
potato and corn chowder...
The Shoe shop...
The Single Brother's House...
A few more pictures to give you a feel of the area...
It is a walking tour so expect to walk a couple miles at least. But there are restrooms scattered along the way, and if you like history, it is interesting.
I also saw my first really colorful tree, but there was only one in the area...
True to form, I guess, it did rain when I visited the village and it rained several hours this afternoon. Tomorrow I am off to New Bern, North Carolina. Never been there before but it is on a large river and promises to be peaceful. Hopefully, there will be fewer stink bugs, but I'm not counting on that.
Thanks for visiting...
Talk to you on Monday...
