July 13: Summer Enjoyment

Yesterday was an eye opener.  The new realtor showed us four homes complete with going through the houses and pointing out good and concerning issues.  She wanted my son to think about a house if he was interested and get back to her.  So completely different from our first realtor.

Only one house fit his needs but not quite...so the realtor suggested that we continue looking but was quite positive that he would find a house that he liked.  The housing costs have lowered and they are not being sold as fast as they were a few months ago.  All good things for us...

And now that we found that pods would fit here, we will be arranging for them this week and begin packing.

So Wednesday's focus is reading.  How do you read?  Do you skim whole paragraphs at a time or do you read sentences at once or each word?  I think the answer of that depends on what and why you are reading.

For instance, when studying for my master's, the reading list was enormous so I used the trick of reading the first and last sentence of a paragraph to grasp what the main idea was.  If I wanted more information, I would go back and read the entire paragraph.  Most times, reading the first and last sentence sufficed.

I can also read very fast or somewhat slower.  If I am reading a cosy mystery, I read fast and the information seems to go into my short term memory.  If it is something that I want a deeper understanding, I read slower and shovel the information into my long term memory.

I have thought that maybe I was a reader because my parents were readers and encouraged me to read.  I truly love to read.

So, how do you read?  More to the point, how often do you read?  If you don't read, or read very little, begin with something you want to read...fiction, how-to, history, etc.  Find something you enjoy and build on it.  Reading is something with which you can entertain yourself.  And if you read electronically, you can be sure to always have something with you.

I used to have tons of books and believe me moving all those books was just plain crazy.  Now I read on my phone or iPad or Kindle.  I do purchase some books...mostly non-fiction...but almost all of my fiction books come from the library (electronically) or FreeBooksy (You can sign up and get free books daily.)

Spend some quiet time reading this summer...it's an enjoyable activity...

Talk with you tomorrow...
